VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad (4-13, 2-3 BIG EAST) fell, 69-57, to the Villanova University Wildcats (9-7, 4-1 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. Georgetown opened the contest strong, but allowed a late first-half run to shift the momentum to the Wildcats for the remainder of the game.
Junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) led the way with 12 points and freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 10 points. Sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) posted nine points and a team-best 11 rebounds.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Wildcats, 45-28, but had 17 turnovers to `Nova's six. Villanova shot 46.6 percent with Katherine Coyer leading the way posting 14 points, and Georgetown shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field.
The Hoyas started strong as freshman guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) sank a jumper to open the game and McCormick nailed a 3-pointer. The Wildcats answered with a pair of 3-pointers of their own and a free throw to tie it at seven.
The lead went back and forth, as McCormick kept GU in it with a trio of treys in the first seven minutes. A three-point play by Burton made the score 19-15 as the pace picked up to Georgetown's advantage. McCormick added a baseline jumper to make it 23-17 midway through the half for the Blue & Gray's largest lead of the game to that point.
Georgetown clung to a small lead as the half went on as the defense came up with rebounds and the offense connected high-percentage shots. Late in the second, the Wildcats staged a 13-0 run including a pair of threes from Katherine Coyer to give `Nova back the lead, 34-27.
Adomako ended the scoring drought driving and laying it in with under three to play, However, the damage had been done as GU now had to get some stops and score on the other end.
Adomako was strong down low, but it wasn't enough for a comeback as GU trailed, 41-33, at the break.
Villanova opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to move ahead, 47-33, and forcing the Hoyas to call timeout. Junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) answered with a 3-pointer of her own, but the `Cats kept hitting from beyond the arc.
The Blue & Gray was quiet in the second scoring just six points in the first eight minutes as the Wildcats continued to build a lead.
Late in the half, the Hoyas had success going inside as Adomako and freshman center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) were active. Junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 15, 69-54. Adomako added a pair of free throws and Belk sank one to cut the lead to 12, but it was too little too late as GU fell, 69-57.
