WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad (4-12, 2-2 BIG EAST) downed the Providence College Friars (4-12, 1-4 BIG EAST) Friday evening at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The Blue & Gray battled throughout the game to hold on for the 69-61 victory.
"BIG EAST play is a new season, a new opportunity, and we are starting to gel at the right time," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "You can see us finish, you can see us grinding things out, you can see their work pay off for them. Anytime you get a conference win, anytime you get an opportunity to defend your home court it's a great team win."
The Hoyas had four players in double figures with junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) leading the way scoring 18 points and pulling in seven boards. Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) scored 16 points with seven rebounds and freshman guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) had 14 points and six boards. Junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) rounded out those in double figures with 12 points.
The Blue & Gray outrebounded the Friars, 45-42, and shot 40.6 percent from the field while forcing 19 Providence turnovers.
The game was back and forth early on with the Friars employing a trapping press which forced turnovers, but also gave the Hoyas scoring opportunities on the break. A 3-pointer gave Providence its largest lead of the game, 20-12, midway through the first as the Friars staged an 11-0 run after the Hoyas had led by three just minutes earlier.
Looking at an eight-point deficit, the Hoyas managed a comeback with an 8-2 run with five points from Battle and a trey by junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken). That made it 22-20 at the 6:35 mark.
The Friars regrouped and answered with another 6-0 run to once again push the lead to eight, but the Hoyas didn't back down.
A 3-pointer by Horne stopped the momentum and Vitalis hit a layup to make it 28-25. PC answered, but buckets from fresham point guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) and Horne cut the lead to one, 30-29, with under two minutes to play.
Two late Friar scores made it 34-29 at the break.
Providence opened the second with a bucket, but Adomako hit back-to-back layups and Battle forced a steal resulting in another layup to make it 36-35 and forced Providence to call a timeout.
Vitalis hit a shot just a few minutes in to take a one-point lead, but a Friar free throw tied it at 39 on the next possession. Horne drove the baseline and hit the three-point play and the Blue & Gray was on a roll going ahead by seven and in total an 18-7 run to start the half.
A big Friar trey cut it to three, but Vitalis laid it in on the other end just before the shot clock expired to get the bucket. Providence was battling back and a 3-pointer with 7:30 to go gave the squad back the lead. PC went up by four, but it continued to be Vitalis who fought with a layup and defensive rebound to make it a one-possession game.
After a sloppy few minutes, Burton beat the clock with a runner to tie it at 55 with 3:59 to go. The ensuing free throw was missed, but Vitalis pulled down the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Horne on the left side who sank a trey to make it 58-55.
PC answered, but Burton got a steal and passed it to a streaking Adomako for the layup to make the score 60-57 with 2:41 to go.
At 2:08. Horne hit her final 3-pointer of the contest to seal and victory and force the Friars to foul resulting in the 69-61 final.
