Oct. 19, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team hosted local non-conference opponent the University of Maryland-Baltimore Country (UMBC) for a 16-inning exhibition game on Saturday at Shirley Povich Field.
Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) started on the mound and, for the second-consecutive start, went three scoreless innings allowing just one hit while striking out one. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) and Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) both threw two innings and gave one run. Pomeroy recovered from a shaky start and finished with three strikeouts. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) each pitched scoreless innings of work. Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas/Trinity Christian Academy) pitched three strong innings, giving up just one run while striking out three. Chris Giordano (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland), Anthony Morabito (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College HS) and Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) all also got in work on mound.
The Hoyas manufactured their first run in the second inning when Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a balk and scored on an RBI groundout by Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's).
Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School) scored the second run when he was awarded home plate on another UMBC balk. Dillon reached base on a hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a single by Webber. He then went to third when Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) hit a hard ground ball up the middle that the shortstop stabbed and made a strong effort to turn a double play.
Two more runs scored when Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) singled and scored on the second home run of the fall from Bennett Stehr (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte).
The Hoyas led 4-2 at the end of nine innings.
GU added runs in the later innings behind more wildness from the UMBC pitchers, sacrifice flies from Joe Sleiman (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) as well as a two-run, two-out single by Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS).
Saturday wrapped up Georgetown's fall schedule. The Hoyas are coming off of a 2015 season that saw them finish 25-28 overall and 8-10 in BIG EAST play, qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships for the first time since 1986.
