Oct. 26, 2015 WASHINGTON - Freshman middle blocker Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll when the conference announced its awards on Monday. The award recognizes Speech's performance in Georgetown's two matches last weekend against St. John's and Providence.
Speech averaged 3.43 kills per set and 1.43 blocks per set, while hitting at a .500 clip as Georgetown (9-14, 3-8 BIG EAST) went 1-1 in a pair of home conference matches over the weekend. Despite playing only half of the team's rotations as a middle blocker, Speech led the team in kills and blocks in both matches. She had 10 kills with only one error for a .562 hitting percentage against St. John's on Friday while also adding three blocks. On Sunday versus Providence, Speech led the Hoyas with 14 kills while registering a .455 hitting percentage on 22 swings. She set a career high with seven total blocks, including two of the solo variety.
Monday was Speech's first-career BIG EAST weekly honor and the fourth of the season for the Hoyas. Earlier this month, Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) was named to honor roll and Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) earned consecutive selections in September.
Georgetown will embark on a four-match road trip over the next two weekends, playing matches at Seton Hall, Villanova, DePaul and Marquette.
