Nov. 6, 2015 WASHINGTON - Two members of the Georgetown University men's soccer team were named BIG EAST Players of the Year as the conference announced their annual awards on Friday. Additionally, the Hoyas had four student-athletes named First Team All-BIG EAST, four on the second team and the coaches were named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. This is the third-consecutive year in program history that Georgetown student-athletes have won multiple Player of the Year honors.
With a 2-1 victory over No. 3/2 Creighton University on Thursday, the No. 6/6 Hoyas capped off an undefeated conference season earning the No. 1 overall seed in the conference tournament. This is the fifth time in program history that the Hoyas have won the regular season championship with the last coming in 2013 and the last outright championship coming during the 2010 campaign. It is the fourth under Head Coach Brian Wiese. The last time a team went a perfect 9-0-0 during the BIG EAST Regular Season was the University of Louisville in 2009.
Georgetown is on a program-record 14-game unbeaten streak and has tied the record for consecutive wins with 11. Earlier this year, the Blue & Gray posted six-consecutive shutouts for a program record and has a total of seven on the season.
For the second-consecutive year, junior defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the unanimous BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST. Yaro has started all nine conference games for the Blue & Gray this season, and played a key role in the squad's six conference shutouts.
Already this season, Yaro has been named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Preseason All-BIG EAST and to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI First Team. He was also named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26.
This is the fourth time in program history that a Hoya has been named the conference's defensive player of the year, and the second under Wiese.
Freshman goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) has had an outstanding rookie campaign. Besides being the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, Marcinkowski was also named First Team All-BIG EAST as well as a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman Team.
Marcinkowski posted an impressive 0.44 GAA in BIG EAST play with 19 saves and six shutouts. His seven shutouts overall this season already move him into ninth all-time on the program's career listing and tied for sixth in single-season shutouts.
This is the fifth time in program history that a Hoya has been named the freshman of the year, and the third under Wiese.
Senior forward Brandon Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph) was another unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST honoree. It marks his fourth-consecutive All-BIG EAST honor and his third-consecutive nod to the first team. Allen had 15 points on six goals and three assists in conference play as well as four game winners. Overall, he leads the team in scoring with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points.
Allen currently ranks fourth in career points (110), second in career goals (47) and is listed among the leaders in both season points and goals.
Already this season, he was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Preseason All-BIG EAST and to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI First Team. He was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions and to the honor roll twice as well as earning CollegeSoccerNews.com National Player of the Week honors.
Rounding out the first team selections was sophomore Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac). The midfielder was Georgetown's second-leading scorer in conference play with two goals and two assists to his credit for six points as well as two games winners. Overall, Basuljevic is third on the team in scoring with five goals and four assists for 14 points as well as a team-best four game winners on the season.
This season he was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Preseason Best XI, and was the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 19. Basuljevic was the 2014 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and a unanimous selection to last year's BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
Four Hoyas were also named Second Team All-BIG EAST beginning with junior Alex Muyl (New York, N.Y./Bard). The forward is Georgetown's second-leading scorer overall with four goals and a team-best nine assists for 17 points. His 0.59 assists per game rank him third in the league and seventh in the nation. Muyl has a squad-high six assists in BIG EAST play as well. He was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 28.
This is his second-consecutive nod to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
A trio of senior captain defenders were the final three GU selections to the second team. Keegan Rosenberry (Ronks, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite), Cole Seiler (Anderson, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) and Josh Turnley (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) were all named to the second team making Georgetown's entire starting defense all-conference selections.
The group played a major role in the squad's seven shutouts this season and has been a key element of the team's unbeaten streak.
Rosenberry had one goal and four assists along with one game winner in conference play as well as one goal and five assists overall to rank as Georgetown's fifth-leading scorer with seven points. He was named Preseason All-BIG EAST and to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Oct. 5. This is his third-consecutive nod to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Seiler has had two goals and one assist on the season with his most memorable goal coming in the 83rd minute in the Creighton victory on Thursday. He was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Oct. 12. This marks his first-career BIG EAST honor.
Turnley has tallied one assist on the season coming against Marquette University. This is his first-career BIG EAST honor.
Georgetown had the most players named all-conference with eight, which is also a program record.
Additionally, the coaching staff was named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. It marks the fifth time in program history and the third under Wiese who also won it 2013 and 2010.
The top-seeded Hoyas will play the winner of No. 4 Xavier and No. 5 DePaul and are guaranteed home-field advantage throughout the BIG EAST Championship. GU will open tournament play on Thursday, Nov. 12 in a semifinal matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Shaw Field. Live stats will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
