WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team rebounded from its loss at the hands of UNC Wilmington on Friday afternoon and won both of its matchups at the Landfall Park Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational on Saturday in Wilmington, N.C. GU was victorious over Saint Joseph's, 5-1, in its first game and went on to defeat UNC Wilmington, 11-3, in six innings. The victories move the Blue & Gray to 5-3 on the season.
Game One: Georgetown 5, Saint Joseph's 1
Behind a solid effort from senior Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), who pitched a complete game and is now 3-1 this season, the Hoyas allowed only one run in their game versus the Hawks.
The Hawks' biggest scoring threat came in the top of the third inning when the bases were loaded, but solid defense by the Hoyas squashed the threat.
Georgetown got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to take the lead. A single from Hyson up the middle brought in Payton Lawton (Yorba Linda, Calif./Rosary) to put GU up 1-0 with one out. Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) and Hyson added two more runs as they both scored, unearned, following walks with the bases loaded to go up 3-0.
Saint Joseph's scored a run in the top of the sixth, but the Hoyas added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach. A triple by Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) scored Kane and a single by Hyson following the triple brought in Giovanniello to make it 5-1.
"I love how hard the girls are playing," said Head Coach Pat Conlan. "We hit the ball well and had excellent pitching performances."
Game Two: Georgetown 11, UNC Wilmington 3
Georgetown allowed just three runs en route to defeat UNC Wilmington on Saturday afternoon, 11-3, in a rematch of Friday night's game that saw GU defeated by the Seahawks in nine innings, 5-4.
The Hoyas wasted no time getting on the board as a single by Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) scored Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) in the top of the second inning to give GU an early 1-0 lead. A double to left field by Giovanniello in the top of the third inning scored Kane to increase the lead to 2-0.
UNC Wilmington tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning, but the Hoyas kept finding hits as they scored another two runs in the fifth inning. The runs came courtesy of Giovanniello as she scored Kane following her first home run of the season in the top of the inning and increased the lead to 4-2 in favor of the Blue & Gray. The bats would stay hot for Georgetown as the team exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth.
Gabriela Elvina scored the first run of the inning, increasing the lead to 5-2 and the Hoyas would never look back. Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) singled to center to score Giovanniello and Kane, to put the Blue & Gray up 7-2, and the Hoyas kept the hits coming as Appelbe hit her second home run of the season that added an additional three runs. Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida hit her third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field that put the Hoyas up 11-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Seahawks added one run at the bottom of the inning before the game was called.
"Tonight's win against UNC Wilmington was especially rewarding after the extra inning loss to them last night," said Conlan. "The team played with incredible fire and I can't wait to get on the field again."
Georgetown will return to North Carolina next weekend as it travels to Greensboro to participate in the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic taking place Feb. 20-22.
