WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team dropped both of its games on the first day of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Kissimmee, Fla., to fall to 5-5 on the season. The Hoyas faced the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks at 1:15 p.m. and the No.23-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 5:45 p.m.
The Hoyas dropped their decision against the Mavericks by a final score of 7-4. It was the first ever contest between the two schools.
Georgetown faced No. 23-Notre Dame for the seventh time on Friday afternoon, the Fighting Irish defeated the Hoyas 12-3 in a shortened five inning game. With the win the Fighting Irish now hold the all-time series lead, 8-0.
Senior Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and freshman Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) split pitching duties for the Blue & Gray with each putting in 2.1 innings of work.
The Hoyas were able to hold Notre Dame to one hit over the first two innings, but the high-powered Irish offense scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to go up 6-0 on the Blue & Gray. Notre Dame scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 8-0.
Georgetown got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when a Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) triple to right field scored Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/Jack C. Hays) and Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) to make the score 8-2. Elvina added the third run following a sacrifice fly by Payton Lawton (Yorba Linda, Calif./Rosary).
Norte Dame added an additional four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 12-3 and end the game.
The Hoyas will take the field on Saturday afternoon when they face Indiana at 1:15 p.m., before taking on Fordham at 5:45 p.m.
