Feb. 8, 2015 Final Stats
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team dropped its final game as a participant at the Music City Classic to IUPUI, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. The Hoyas now stand at 2-2 early in the 2015 season.
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) pitched the complete game for the Blue & Gray, and now has a record of 1-1.
The Hoyas struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning after holding the Jaguars to zero hits at the top of the inning. A single to left field by Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) scored Hyson and put GU up 1-0. Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) added to the Hoya lead as her home run scored Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida and set the score at 3-0.
The Jaguars were quick to strike back, however, as they scored three runs at the top of the second inning to tie the game at three apiece. They followed that up with another two runs at the top of the third to go up 5-3, a lead they would maintain through the rest of the game.
"IUPUI was a tough loss," said Head Coach Pan Conlan. "We jumped out to an early lead but walks and errors hurt us."
Both the Jaguars and the Hoyas had one hit each in the fifth inning, but were unable to turn it into something more.
At the bottom of the sixth inning, the Hoyas had runners on first and second, but a ground out to the infield by Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) prevented the Hoyas from coming back.
"Overall it was a good opening weekend," said Conlan. "We will get back to practice on Tuesday and work on some things to prepare for next weekend."
The Hoyas will travel to Wilmington, N.C., this weekend to participate in the UNC Wilmington Landfall Park Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational where they will face UMBC, UNC Wilmington and Saint Joseph's (Pa.). The Hoyas start the tournament against the UMBC Retrievers on Friday at 10 a.m. ET.
