Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (4-26, 2-16 BIG EAST) fell to the Providence College Friars (5-23, 2-15 BIG EAST), 81-66, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall in the BIG EAST Conference regular season finale. With the loss, the Blue & Gray clinch the 10th seed in the BIG EAST Championship next weekend.

Junior guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) led the way with 19 points, while sophomore guard Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) added 17 and a team-best nine rebounds as the two Hoyas in double figures. Junior guard Brittany Horne (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) managed eight points and seven rebounds.

The Hoyas were outrebounded, 43-39, and both teams committed 21 turnovers apiece. The difference was in shooting where GU managed 34.3 percent (23-of-67) from the field, but the Friars converted 49.1 percent (28-of-57) of their shots.

Following PC's senior day ceremony, the Friars jumped out to an early lead with a 9-0 run before Woodard hit a jumper for Georgetown's first points of the contest. McCormick cut it to eight on a rare four-point play hitting a 3-pointer and the free throw to make it 16-8 as the Blue & Gray battle back from an early deficit. Junior guard Logan Battle (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) added a 3-pointer for the 7-0 run before the Friars could answer.

The Hoyas went cold as Providence continued to score. However, late in the half, McCormick took over to cut it to 10, 34-24, on a pair of buckets. Woodard added two free throws to make the deficit eight, but the Friars countered with a 4-0 run.

Providence led by as much as 14 with less than a minute to go in the half, but GU continued to fight. Junior forward Dominique Vitalis (Bloomfield, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) hit a layup and the defense forced a turnover getting one last possession. On the final play, McCormick sank a 3-pointer from the right side to make it 42-33 at the break.

Georgetown outrebounded PC, 25-21, but had 13 turnovers to the Friars' 11 in the half. Providence shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) in the half, while the Hoyas managed just 30.0 percent (12-of-40) shooting from the field.

The Friars moved ahead by 10 early in the second, but the Blue & Gray managed to cut it to six on baskets from Woodard and Horne. The game continued this way as Georgetown would make it a single-digit game and Providence would answer.

Six was as close as Georgetown would get as the squad couldn't find a late run and Providence kept firing. The Blue & Gray wouldn't find the answer down the stretch, eventually falling, 81-66.

The Hoyas will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Saturday, March 7 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The 10th-seeded Hoyas will face the seventh-seeded Musketeers of Xavier University in the first round of the tournament. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
