WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team and DePaul spilt Saturday's doubleheader at Guy Mason Field. Both games were marked by stellar defensive play and dramatic at-bats. The split moves Georgetown to 13-23 overall and 3-6 in conference play. Game two's nine-inning victory was not only the first loss in conference play for the Blue Demons, but it was the first time in 11 meetings that GU emerged victorious.
Game One: DePaul 2, Georgetown 0
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) pitched the complete game for the Blue & Gray giving up two runs off seven hits and striking out nine.
DePaul was on the board very early in the game as Morgan Maize hit a solo shot over the center field fence on the first pitch of the game to go up 1-0. The Blue Demons threatened to increase their lead in the top of the third but a throw from Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/Jack C. Hays) from center reached Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) at home to end the inning.
The Hoyas displayed strong defense in innings four through six, with shortstop Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) making standout plays for consecutive outs in the fifth inning.
DePaul wouldn't go quietly, however, and pitcher Mary Connolly sent a shot over left center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the victory for the Blue Demons. In the victory, Connolly held GU to only two hits.
Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) and Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) recorded hits for the Blue & Gray in the game one loss.
Game 2: Georgetown 5, DePaul 4
In a wild game two that spanned nine innings, freshman Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) and Hyson both saw time in the circle for the Hoyas. Geehr got the start and went five innings allowing three runs off five hits. Hyson came in for the final four innings of play and recorded five strikeouts while allowing one run off three hits.
After a quiet two innings of play that resulted in no hits for either team, Georgetown jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning when Hyson scored an unearned run following a throwing error by the third basemen to first. Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King), who also reached base on the error, scored shortly thereafter as a sacrifice fly by Henry brought her home. The Hoyas ended the inning with a 2-0 lead.
GU increased its lead in the third when Appelbe doubled to left center and scored Hyson and moved the Hoyas up 3-0. Another double in the fifth inning, this time by Henry, allowed Hyson to score the run that made it 4-0.
The Blue Demons came alive in the top of the sixth as they scored four runs off five hits to tie the game up at 4-4.
Georgetown threatened to clinch the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as it loaded the bases with one out, but a strikeout followed by a groundout in the three and four spots in the lineup sent the game to extra innings.
Neither team was able to get anything going in the eighth inning, which set the scene for a dramatic ninth inning. GU shut DePaul down in the top of the inning and it was Elvina, who was batting eighth in the lineup that set the wheels in motion for the Hoyas. After singling up the middle, Elvina advanced to second on a sac bunt and following a wild pitch advanced to third. With one out, Appelbe stepped to the plate and it was the second wild pitch of the inning that allowed Elvina to score what would be the game winning run.
Kane and Appelbe led the way for the Blue & Gray with two hits apiece. Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial), Elvina and Henry, who also had a game-high two RBI, each recorded a hit.
The teams take the field for the rubber match tomorrow morning at Guy Mason Field, first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
