Glen Burnie, Md. - The Georgetown baseball team scored seven runs over the first two innings on its way to a 10-4 victory over Coppin State on Tuesday. The game was played at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie, Maryland.
Evan Ryan (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) led the offense with three hits and scored two runs. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs. Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) and Michael DeRenzi (Mendham , N.J./Seton Hall Prep) each had two hits.
On a designated "staff day," Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans School) started and went three innings, giving up one run on five hits for his team-leading fourth win of the season. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS), Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School), Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) all had scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Hoyas (14-14) got on the board right away in the top of the first. Busch was hit by a pitch to lead things off and went to second when Kuzbel reached base on a throwing error on a sacrifice attempt. After a fielder's choice by Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) put runners on the corners with one out, AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) lined a single to left field to score Busch and push Collins to second. After Collins advanced to third on a fly out, he scored on a wild pitch to give GU a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Hoyas batted around as five runs crossed the plate to extend the lead to 7-0. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) led off with a walk and stole second base. A bunt single by Ryan put runners on the corners with no outs and DeRenzi delivered with a sacrifice fly to center to score Bernstein. After Ryan stole second, Busch singled to again put runners at the corners. Kuzbel followed with a double to the right field wall to push both Ryan and Busch across the plate. Collins walked and both he and Kuzbel advanced on a double steal. A wild pitch scored Kuzbel and put Collins on third. One batter later, Bialkowski lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Collins to complete the scoring.
After Coppin State (2-23) scored its first run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second, Ryan got his second hit with a one-out double in the top of the third. He went to third on a bunt single by DeRenzi and scored when DeRenzi was caught stealing, bringing the score to 8-1 in Georgetown's favor.
Kuzbel led off the fourth inning with a single and moved up to second on a ground out by Collins. With two outs, he scored on an RBI single by Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School) to give the Hoyas a 9-1 advantage.
The Eagles scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning off of Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and one run off of Vincent Leoni (West Hill, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) in the sixth.
GU added an insurance run in the eighth when Ryan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs to score Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont), who had reached on a fielder's choice after pinch hitting for Carter in the sixth inning.
The Hoyas jump back into BIG EAST action this weekend with a three-game series at Villanova. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday will both start at 1:15 p.m.
