Bethesda, Md. - A day after Georgetown and Butler combined for 37 hits and 17 runs, the two teams played a wild one on Sunday afternoon, again totaling 37 hits in a 15-12 Georgetown win at Shirley Povich Field.
AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian), who had three hits on Saturday, was a perfect 4-for-4 on Sunday, reaching base six times with two walks, and had three RBI and scored three runs. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) had three hits for the second-consecutive day and Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area), Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines), Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) and Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) all had two hits. Busch and Hall each added three RBI and scored two runs.
Following Saturday night's 22-hit attack, Georgetown's (24-23, 7-8 BIG EAST) offense was alive early as five of the first six batters reached base in the first inning. Busch led things off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Bushor. Collins chopped a single into right field, scoring Busch and sending Bushor to third. Carter followed with a single of his own, pushing Bushor across the plate and putting runners on the corners. Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School) reached on a bunt single, scoring Collins and, with two outs, Hall singled in Carter to give the Hoyas a 4-0 lead.
Butler (20-29, 6-9 BIG EAST), which outhit Georgetown, 19-18, scored four runs off of Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) in the top of the third to tie the score.
The Hoyas came storming with their biggest scoring inning of the season, plating eight runs in the bottom half of the third. The first four batters reached without the benefit of a hit as Carter walked, Dillon and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) were both hit by a pitch and Hall drew a bases loaded walk. DeRenzi followed with an infield single, scoring Dillon from third. Busch then cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. After Collins was intentionally walked with two outs, Carter capitalized with a double of his own to score Busch. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) followed with a two-run single, scoring both Collins and Carter to give GU a 12-4 lead.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 12-7.
Again the Hoyas answered, putting two more runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning, to extend their lead to 14-7. Webber led off with a single and scampered all the way home on a double by Hall. With two outs, Bushor lined a triple into right field, eluding the diving right fielder, to score Hall.
Butler scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings off of Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS), who picked up his third win with 2.1 innings of relief a day after throwing 3.2 innings for a save on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored two more in the seventh off of Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's HS/Phillips Andover) to cut Georgetown's lead to 14-11.
After the lead was cut to just two, 14-12, when Butler scored again in the top of the eighth, the Hoyas scored a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Bushor was hit by a pitch and went all the way to third when Collins hit a ground ball that went through the legs of the second baseman. Carter followed with his fourth hit of the day, a single into center field, to score Bushor and bump the lead back to three, 15-12.
David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) pitched a scoreless ninth, his second inning of work, to pick up his ninth save of the season.
