Sept. 17, 2015 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown men's tennis team bounced back from a competitive Penn Invite with a 9-0 blanking of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Hoyas defeated the Firebirds with ease in doubles action, before notching six single victories in straight sets to seal Georgetown's first win of the season.
In doubles action, Jack Murphy and Yannik Mahlangu paired up for only the second time this season and dominated on court three, shutting out Drew Stewart and Ander Murillo, 8-0, for the first win for Georgetown. Jordan Portner (Ellicott, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) paired with Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) defeated Rok Bozic and Marco Feligioni, 8-3, and Mike Chen and Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) defeated Diego Pinto and Alexis Baguelin, 8-6.
GU opened singles action by taking first set victories on all six courts. Mahlangu and Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo. /Clayton) would push the Hoya lead to 3-0, with commanding wins at the bottom of the lineup. Mahlangu swept both of his sets, 6-0, while Rechan only allowed his opponent to win one game as he notched a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Beatty scored his third win of the season, defeating Diego Pinto 6-3, and 7-5 as Lam secured his second win of the season as Rob Bozic retired in the second set, 6-0 and 3-1.
Chen and Bart Panarese solidified Georgetown's sweep 9-0 sweep with victories on court three (6-2/6-4) and six (6-2/6-3) respectively.
The Hoyas will look to extend their success at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., Sept. 25-27.
