Jan. 30, 2016

WASHINGTON -

The Georgetown University men's tennis team (1-3) took to the courts for the first time in two weeks and defeated Navy, 4-3 on Friday at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.

The match opened with a back-and-fourth battle as the teams split the first two doubles matches to be completed. Sophomores Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) struck first defeating Navy's Alex Gaines and Austin Jones, 6-2, at the No. 2 flight. The Mids evened the score as Andrey Majkic and Aries Wong beat Yannik Mahlangu (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley High School) and Jack Murphy(Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day), 6-3, at the No.3 flight.

With each team securing a win, the doubles point came down to the No.1 flight. Representing the Hoyas in the longest of the three contests were Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) and Jordan Portner (Ellicott, Md./Mount Saint Joseph). Despite only being paired up for the second time this season, the duo outplayed Navy's Krishna Jana and Tucker Massie, 6-4, to secure the doubles point for the Blue & Gray.

Singles play proved to be another back-and-forth battle between the teams as the Mids evened the score at 1-1 when Wong posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Portner at No. 3 singles.

Unyielding, GU scored the next two points with win at No. 6 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Mahlangu earned the first point for Georgetown downing Joshua Martin, 6-2, 6-0 and Chen continued the momentum, defeating Majkic, 6-4, 6-3.

The Mids would score one more point at the No. 2 flight to cut Georgetown's lead to 3-2. However, the Hoyas clinched their fourth team point and the victory at the No. 5 flight as Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) defeated Gaines, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Georgetown will look to continue its success on Saturday, Feb.6 as the Hoyas match up against Princeton.
