Oct. 16, 2016 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men's tennis team competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals in Blacksburg, Va., at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech this past weekend. With five singles competitors and three doubles pairs, Georgetown had three of the singles players advance to the second round as well as all three pairs.
Junior Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) handily defeated William Jones from Howard in the opening round, 6-1, 6-1. He then played 14th-seeded Javier Maestre from Old Dominion University but fell 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) downed qualifier Florian Uffer from Longwood University by a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in a three-set battle. He went on to face seeded Aws Laaribi from Penn State but fell in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 despite starting strong.
Junior Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) met local-rival Chris Fletcher from George Washington University who was one of the seeded players in the tournament. Beatty pulled the upset with a 7-6 (4-0), 6-4 victory to move on to the second round. He then fell to Jason Kros from Virginia Tech 6-3, 6-4.
Senior Yannick Mahlangu (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley High School) fell to Gabriel Nemeth from Penn State University, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round of the main draw. Junior Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) also lost with a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Juan Araoz from Hampton University. He then went on to win one match in the back draw by a score of 7-6, 6-3 over Eric Biscoveanu from Temple University.
In doubles play, the duo of Beatty and Mahlangu won, 8-3, in the first round against a team from Duquesne, but then fell by a score of 8-5 against a duo from Virginia Tech.
Chen and partner senior Jordan Portner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) downed a team from Hampton that included Araoz, 8-5. The team then fell in the second round, 8-3, to a pair from Old Dominion.
The duo of Lam and Rechan played a pair of St. John's University marking GU's lone BIG EAST opponent. The Hoyas took down the Red Storm, 8-6, but fell by a score of 8-5 to a team from Penn State in the second round.
Georgetown has one more tournament this fall. The team will play at the Navy Invitational next weekend.
