Georgetown Softball Falls to Towson

Feb. 13, 2016

WASHINGTON -

Despite an offensive outburst in the bottom of the third, the Georgetown softball team was unable to overcome a steady Towson, falling to the Tigers 11-4 on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas' second game of the day against Charleston Southern was called due to dusk.

Game One: Towson 11, Georgetown 4

Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) got the start for the Hoyas in the circle. The junior faced 35 batters over 5.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) finished out the game for Georgetown, opposite 11 batters in 1.2 innings.

Towson led for the entire ballgame, using a total of four extra base hits, including one homerun to defeat the Hoyas. The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and followed up with single runs in the second and third for a 6-0 lead.

Relentless, the Hoyas responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Sparking the GU run, Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) singled up the middle while Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) followed onto first on a fielder's choice. With only one out and runners on first and second, Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) blazed a homerun to left field for 3RBI, bringing the score to 6-3.

The Hoyas stayed hot for one more run as Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) doubled to left center and Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) singled to right field to put the score at 6-4.

Despite Georgetown's success at the bat, it couldn't keep Towson from cushioning its lead as the Tigers added two more runs in the fourth inning and three more runs in the fifth inning.

The Blue & Gray put up four more hits but would not be able to capitalize giving the game to Towson, 11-4.

Game Two: cancelled due to dusk

Georgetown's second game of the day against tournament host Charleston Southern was called in the bottom of the first due to dusk at the CSU Softball Field.

The Blue & Gray return to the field next weekend as it travels to Jacksonville, Fla., to face off against Penn State, Pittsburgh, Radford and host Jacksonville.
