DAVIDSON, N.C. - Despite 15 hits and a 6-for-6 effort from Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), the Georgetown University baseball team lost to Davidson College, 12-8, on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. GU fell to 2-4 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 4-3.
DeRenzi paced the offense with his six hits and three runs scored and also stole a base. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) had four hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) was on base four times with a hit and three walks, and also scored a run and had an RBI. Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic) contributed a pair of RBI.
Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, while striking out four. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) had a scoreless relief outing, pitching 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
The Hoyas had a golden chance to score in the top of the first as, for the second-straight game, they loaded the bases with the first three batters. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) was hit by a pitch with the first pitch of the game and DeRenzi and Kuzbel followed with singles to load the bases, but Bialkowski grounded back to the mound, forcing Hall out at home, and Dillon grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Davidson capitalized on the momentum with four runs in the bottom of the first on three singles and a triple.
GU began chipping away, pushing two runs across in the top of the third to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. Hall led off with a single and advanced to second on a hit by DeRenzi. Kuzbel followed with a single of his own, scoring Hall from second. A walk to Bialkowski loaded the bases and Dillon lofted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring DeRenzi.
The Hoyas took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) on first with a walk, DeRenzi and Kuzbel hit back-to-back singles, the latter scoring Weisenberg. After another Bialkowski walk loaded the bases, Dillon reached on an error by the second baseman, allowing DeRenzi to cross the plate. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) followed with another walk to score Kuzbel and give GU a 5-4 advantage.
The Wildcats answered however, with eight unanswered runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings off of five Georgetown pitchers to take a 12-5 lead.
The Blue & Gray climbed back with a three-run top of the eighth. DeRenzi and Kuzbel again led off with back-to-back singles and Bialkowski launched a double to the wall in right-center field, scoring DeRenzi. Dillon pushed Kuzbel across the plate with a ground out. Bushor lined a single into left field to put runners at the corners and Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) hit a pinch-hit single into center to score Bialkowski. The Hoyas loaded the bases with two outs but Hall, representing the tying run, was robbed of an extra base hit when the right fielder made a diving catch on a fly ball down the line.
GU put two runners on in the ninth inning, but could not get any closer.
Georgetown will play its home opener on Wednesday, March 2 when it hosts UMBC at 2 :30 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field. A web stream and live stats for the game can be found at guhoyas.com.
