PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Bennett Stehr (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) homered in the first inning and the Georgetown University baseball team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Moravian College on Thursday night. The game was played at North Charlotte Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. GU improved to 5-7 on the season, while Moravian fell to 4-6.
Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) made his first career start, firing four scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) pitched two innings in relief, giving up one unearned run with three strikeouts. Max Allen (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) threw two perfect innings with two strikeouts and Anthony Morabito (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College HS) pitched a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) led the GU offense with three hits and three RBI. He was on base four times with a walk and also scored a run. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) also had three hits while Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) each had two-hit nights.
Georgetown got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) led off with a single up the middle and stole second, advancing to third on a throwing error. Bernstein was hit by a pitch on the ninth pitch of the at-bat. After a ground out moved Bernstein into scoring position, Stehr crushed a three-run home run to dead center field to give the Blue & Gray a 3-0 lead.
The Hoyas added two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 5-0. DeRenzi led off the inning by reaching on an error and Stehr walked. DeRenzi advanced to third on a fly out before Hall hit a fly ball that the right fielder lost in the lights, allowing DeRenzi to score and Stehr to go to third. Weisenberg then pushed a squeeze bunt for an RBI single, scoring Stehr.
Moravian scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, but GU answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) was hit by a pitch and Hall reached on a bunt single to start things off before Weisenberg lined a double into the left-center gap to score both runners. Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) pushed Weisenberg to third with a sacrifice bunt before Shirley lofted a sacrifice fly to left to give Georgetown an 8-1 lead.
The Hoyas will travel across the state to conclude their spring break trip with a three-game series against the University of Pennsylvania.
