March 26, 2016

Final Stats

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Georgetown University baseball team in heartbreaking, walk-off fashion, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. GU fell to 11-13 on the season, while UNCG improved to 18-6.

Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had his third-straight multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. He now has hit safely in 10-consecutive games and has six multi-hit efforts in that span. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) both also had two hits.

Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started and went 5+ strong innings. He held the nation's top offense to just one run on five hits with one strikeout. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) pitched two innings in relief, giving up two runs while striking out one. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) took the loss, giving up two unearned runs in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Georgetown defense was on its game early as Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) threw out a pair of base runners in the first three innings. He nailed a potential base stealer in the bottom of the first before picking off a runner at second base to eliminate a threat in the third. The Hoyas turned their fourth double play of the weekend in the bottom of the second.

In the outfield, DeRenzi and Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic) both made running catches in right and center field, respectively, in the fourth inning and Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) made a leaping catch against the fence in left field in the sixth to save extra bases.

After a pitching duel for the first five innings, the Hoyas broke through first in the top of the sixth. DeRenzi and Kuzbel led off with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) then hit a ground ball to second, forcing out Kuzbel at second. However, the relay throw to first was wild, allowing DeRenzi to run home to give GU a 1-0 lead.

UNCG answered with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead.

The Hoyas came right back in the top of the seventh, pushing three runs across to regain the lead, 4-2.Bernstein led off with an infield single, moved to second on a ground out by Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) and went to third on a wild pitch. After Webber walked and stole second, Bernstein scored on an RBI ground out from Dillon. Shirley followed with a double down the right field line to score Webber from third and DeRenzi grounded a single into right field to allow Shirley to cross the plate.

The Spartans got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to cut Georgetown's lead to one, 4-3.

After Ellingson threw a perfect eighth inning, he came back out for the ninth looking for his sixth save of the season. The leadoff man reached base on an error and moved to second on a single. A sacrifice bunt put the tying and winning runs in scoring position and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Another walk tied the score before a sacrifice fly gave UNCG the win.

The Hoyas will continue their nine-game road swing with a pair of midweek games against George Mason and Coppin State. First pitch against the Patriots is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Fairfax, Virginia while the contest against the Eagles is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Baltimore.
