WASHINGTON -

The Georgetown University softball team (7-27, 1-7 BIG EAST) fell behind early and could not climb out of an early seven-run hole in a 10-2 loss to Towson University (26-10, 4-4 CAA) in a five-inning game at Guy Mason Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior catcher Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the fourth inning for the Hoyas lone run. Senior pitcher Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.J./Floral Park Memorial) was charged with the loss, allowing 10 runs, four earned, on nine hits over 5.0 innings.

Four first-inning errors haunted the Hoyas, as the Tigers brought ten batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the opening frame. Giovanniello was charged with just one earned run on four hits, but the damage was done

Giovanniello stifled the Towson bats over the next three innings, holding them scoreless on one hit.

Junior catcher Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) hit a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning to put GU on the board for the first time.

Towson's Daria Edwards lined a three-run home run down the left field line in the top of the fifth inning to extend the Tigers' lead to nine, at 10-1.

A pair of Towson errors allowed senior second baseman Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and sophomore left fielder Payton Lawton (Yorba Linda, Calif./Rosary) to reach base. Freshman center fielder Mallory Belknap's (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) sacrifice fly to centerfield drove in Appelbe, but it was not enough to extend play beyond the fifth inning, as GU fell 10-2.

The Hoyas return to action on Saturday when the start of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series with Seton Hall University. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Pirates is scheduled for noon at Guy Mason Field.
