WASHINGTON -
The Georgetown University softball team (9-34, 3-13 BIG EAST) fell in a doubleheader at BIG EAST opponent Providence on Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-2 in game one and 8-4 in game two.
Game 1: Georgetown 2, Providence 5
The Hoyas opened the series with consecutive singles from sophomore Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) and freshman Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), but it would be Providence to take the early advantage with a four-run first inning. The Friars opening frame was highlighted by a two-run home run from Brittney Veler over the left center fence.
Providence extended its lead by one off an RBI ground out on a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the second inning.
Trailing 5-0, the Hoyas battled with four hits to take back one run in the top of the third. Kane and Belknap once again led off the lineup with back-to-back singles. Quick on her feet, Kane advanced to third from second off an error from Providence's first baseman. With Kane in scoring position, junior catcher Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) singled to the pitcher to drive in Kane. Freshman designated player Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) chipped in a single to right field before the end of the inning.
The teams would go scoreless for the next two innings, until the Hoyas tacked on one more run off a left field single from sophomore Payton Lawton (Yorba Linda, Calif./Rosary) in the top of the sixth inning. Georgetown would ultimately hammer out three hits in the inning, but it wasn't enough to fuel a comeback.
In the circle for the Hoyas, junior pitcher Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) tossed six innings, allowing only two earned runs while striking out two.
Game 2: Georgetown 4, Providence 8
In game two, the Friars jumped out to a 4-0 lead with an unearned run on an error and a three-run home run from Julianne Rurka in the bottom of the first.
Providence pushed its lead to 6-0 off a home run from Paige Mulry and an RBI double from Rurka in the bottom of the second.
Staying consistent at the plate, Kane and Belknap each hammered out RBI doubles to in the top of the third to cut the Friars' lead to four runs, 6-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Providence delivered a triple to center field to send in two runs for an 8-2 lead.
Bennett scored a run on a single in the top of the sixth while consecutive walks added another run in the top of the seventh for the final score, 8-4.
