BALTIMORE - The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Georgetown University baseball team, 9-4, on Tuesday night at Alumni Field. With the loss, GU fell to 24-27 on the season, while UMBC improved to 24-20.
Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) led the offense with two hits and drove in three runs. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) was on base three times and scored two runs and Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) also scored twice.
Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks. Noah Clark (Dallas, Texas/Trinity Christian Academy) fired a scoreless inning in relief.
UMBC took an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the second and one more in the third.
The Hoyas got two runs back in the top of the fourth. Bialkowski led off with a single up the middle and Bushor reached on a two-base error, putting two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Bernauer followed with a single to right field to score Bialkowski before Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to push Bushor across the plate, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2.
Georgetown took the lead in the top of the sixth as Bialkowski again led off, this time reaching on a walk and Bushor followed with an infield single. Bernauer then drove a triple high off the right field wall to score both runners and give GU the 4-3 lead.
The Retrievers, however, scored five runs in the bottom half of the sixth, off of Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans), to retake the lead, 8-4. They added another run in the seventh off of Max Allen (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) to provide the final margin, 9-4.
The Hoyas will play their final BIG EAST series this weekend when they host Villanova University for a three-game set with heavy playoff implications. First pitch at Shirley Povich Field is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday while Sunday's series finale is set for 1 p.m. Prior to Saturday's game, Georgetown will recognize its eight seniors in a Senior Day ceremony.
