Aug. 18, 2016 WASHINGTON - The No. 10 Georgetown University men's soccer team was picked second in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches Poll on Wednesday. Additionally, sophomore JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was named the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year and junior midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) earned a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad.
The Hoyas finished second in the preseason poll with 71 points and two first-place votes, three points shy of tying Creighton with 74 points and five votes for first place. Georgetown was last year's regular-season and tournament champion. Both Creighton and Georgetown were ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 with the Bluejays at No. 7 and Georgetown at No. 10.
Providence was selected third with 64 points and two first-place votes and Xavier rounded out the top four with 58 points and also a vote for first. Butler came in at fifth, two points shy of Xavier with 56 points. Villanova was picked sixth (39 points); while Marquette and St. John's tied for seventh with 28 points each. Rounding out the bottom was DePaul with 22 points and Seton Hall with 10.
Marcinkowski had a breakout rookie year for the Hoyas earning NSCAA Second Team All-Great Lakes Region, First Team All-BIG EAST, as well as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors. He started all 21 games for the Blue & Gray, and posted a 0.69 GAA on the season totaling 63 saves. The freshman went 16-2-3 in the net and managed nine shutouts. He already ranks third in single-season shutouts and eighth in program history in career shutouts.
He was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 14, and was a three-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week selection. Marcinkowski was also named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman squad.
The keeper has spent time with the U.S. Men's National Team, appearing in three camps with the U-20s this past summer.
This is his first preseason honor.
Basuljevic was a First Team All-BIG EAST selection a year ago. As a sophomore, he started all 21 games and was GU's third-leading scorer with six goals and four assists for 16 points. He managed a team-best five game winners. The midfielder was Georgetown's second-leading scorer in conference play with two goals and two assists to his credit for six points as well as two games winners.
Last season he was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Preseason Best XI, and was the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 19. Basuljevic was the 2014 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
The Hoyas are in the midst of preseason camp and will play their final exhibition game on Saturday at the University of Virginia. The Blue & Gray opens the season at No. 2 Akron on August 26.
