Parsells, Evanko Enjoy Experience at USGA Women's Amateur Championship

Aug. 3, 2016

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's golf team was well represented in the opening rounds of the United States Golf Association (USGA) Women's Amateur Championship, which is being held at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa. this week.

Two current Hoyas, rising sophomore Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) and incoming freshman Kate Evanko (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), were among a group of 156 golfers who went through qualifying rounds and advanced to play on the par-71, 6,259-yard course in Pennsylvania.

"The US Women's Amateur is one of the most prestigious events of the summer," Head Coach Katie Brophy said. "Christina and Kate joined the top-25 amateurs in the world, as well as the best collegiate athletes that they will meet in competition during the coming school year."

The field of 156 golfers went through two rounds of stroke play before the field was cut for the start of match play, which began on Wednesday and runs through the weekend.

Parsells posted scores of 3-over par 74 and 7-over par 78 for a two round score of 10-over par 152 and missed the cut by just five strokes. Evanko finished with a two round score of 17-over par 159, with scores of 11-over par 82 and 6-over par 77, respectively.

This was the second-straight year that Parsells had qualified to play in the US Women's Amateur, having competed in last year's event in Oregon. As a freshman at Georgetown during the 2015-16 year, Parsells had a 77.26 stroke average and two top-10 finishes. She was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.

"It was awesome to be back for a second year," she said. "I think it's such a great tournament because it attracts the best amateurs in the world. This year was especially fun because I was able to represent Georgetown. I'm really glad Coach (Brophy) was able come watch both me and Kate play too."

Evanko qualified for the US Women's Amateur earlier this summer after a qualifier in New Jersey.

"I'm really glad to have had the chance to play in my first US Women's Amateur, especially since it was so close to home," Evanko said. "Although I didn't play as well as I hoped, I had a wonderful experience and played against a lot of amazing players. I can't wait to doing so as a Hoya this year."
