PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (9-6, 1-4 BIG EAST) closed out its three-game road swing with a 71-39 win over the Providence College Friars (9-8, 1-5 BIG EAST) on Tuesday evening at Alumni Hall in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. It marked GU's first league win of the season, and the defense's lowest points allowed this season.

"It was a great team win tonight," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "We had four players in double figures, but I don't want to single those four out because it was a team win and we did it with our defense. It was just an overall great team effort."

Four Hoyas scored in double figures as senior forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) led the way with 22 points, and junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) added 17. Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) tallied 14 points in the contest and junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) managed 10.

Adomako posted her third double-double of the season with a team-best 12 rebounds, while junior center Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) and Woodard pulled down nine and eight, respectively. Burton had five assists to lead the Blue & Gray.

Georgetown outrebounded Providence, 41-30, and forced 19 Friar turnovers on nine steals while committing just 10 giveaways. GU shot 45.2 percent from the field (28-of-62), while allowing Providence 29.2 percent shooting (14-of-48) from the field.

The teams traded buckets to open the game, but a 11-0 run sparked by a deep 3-pointer from Woodard made it 17-8 late through the first. Woodard had seven points in the run, and the defense held Providence scoreless for more than four minutes.

The defense stayed strong and allowed just one field goal over the final 6:13 of the quarter to end the first leading 18-11.

Adomako opened the second quarter with a trey and a layup. The layup at 7:07 was historic pushing her past the 1,000-point milestone as a junior. Petke added a layup, and Providence was forced to call timeout with the Blue & Gray leading, 25-15.

With the defense getting stops, Burton stepped up and hit a jumper to make it 27-15. Providence answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to seven, and the Hoyas called timeout to regroup. Burton came out of the break and sank another long bucket as the shot clock expired to move it back to nine, and Adomako added a triple after a stop to make it 32-20.

Providence had one last trey as the first half ended to make it 32-23 at the break.

Georgetown began the second half with an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 17, 40-23. Defense was the key as Woodard tallied two steals in the run and Providence went without a field goal over the first four minutes of the third quarter.

The Blue & Gray continued to push the tempo and the squad was rewarded with layups. Midway through the half, Georgetown built the lead to 19 as the defense was stifling and GU was patient on offense. The Hoyas ended the third with a commanding 59-32 lead.

Georgetown cruised along in the fourth as the squad didn't let up on either end of the floor. The team went on to win, 71-39.

The Hoyas will return home on Friday evening for a 7 p.m. matchup against the St. John's University Red Storm at McDonough Arena. The game will be televised live on FS1 and live stats can be found in the schedule on www.GUHoyas.com.
