Final Stats

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Georgetown University football team trailed by just three entering the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell, 24-10, to the College of the Holy Cross in a Patriot League matchup on Saturday afternoon at Fitton Field. With the loss, the Hoyas fell to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in league play, while the Crusaders improved to 3-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference action.

Gunther Johnson (Anthem, Ariz./Boulder Creek/Arizona) passed for 181 yards and a touchdown. Max Edwards (Germantown, Md./Georgetown Prep) finished with five catches for a team-high 84 yards and Michael Dereus (Hyde Park, Mass./Williston Northampton) hauled in seven catches for 75 yards.

David Akere (Carrolton, Texas/Hebron) led the defense with a season-high 12 tackles. Wesley Bowers (Fort Washington, Md./Bishop McNamara) finished with a career-high nine tackles, tying with Blaise Brown (New Orleans, La./St. Augustine/Loomis Chaffee) for the second most on the team.

After scoreless drives on both teams' first two possessions, the GU defense drove Holy Cross back to its own 19-yard line, forcing a punt. Roemello Walton (Miami, Fla./Miami Norland) broke through the line and made a clean block before Jethro Francois (Winter Haven, Fla./Victory Christian Academy) fell on the loose ball at the 3-yard line. Three plays later, Brad Hurst (Helen, Ga./White County) kicked a 24-yard field goal to give the Hoyas a 3-0 lead with 3:02 left in the first quarter.

The Crusaders answered with a 14-play, 75-yard drive, scoring on a 1-yard rush, to take a 7-3 lead with 12:15 left in the second quarter.

Consecutive red zone stands by the Hoya defense, including sacks by Kendall Catching (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) and Owen Kessler (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) forced field goals of 29 and 31 yards that gave Holy Cross a 13-3 lead at halftime.

Georgetown broke into the end zone late in the third quarter, putting together a seven-play, 72-yard drive. Johnson had a pair of completions to Dereus and one to Edwards before finding Tommy Jesson (Orlando, Fla./East River) for a 14-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 13-10 with just 12 seconds remaining in the quarter. It was Jesson's first career touchdown reception.

Holy Cross came back with another long drive, but the GU defense held again in the red zone, stopping a first-and-goal situation from inside the 5-yard line. A 29-yard field goal, extended Holy Cross' lead back to six, 16-10. On their next drive, the Crusaders added a touchdown and a two-point conversion to complete the scoring.

The Hoyas will return home next weekend to take on Lafayette in a Homecoming matchup on Saturday, Nov. 4. Kickoff at Cooper Field is set for 2 p.m.
