DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson College scored six runs in the sixth inning as the Georgetown University baseball team fell, 9-4, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Hoyas fell to 1-1 while the Wildcats improved to 1-1. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started and went 5.2 innings giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high seven. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) fired a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut, picking up his first-career strikeout. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) also made his debut and pitched a scoreless frame.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had two hits and three RBI while Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) and Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) both had three hits. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) was on base twice with a pair of walks. Georgetown registered 10 hits for the second-consecutive game and put a runner on base in eight of the nine innings, but left 10 runners on base.
The Hoyas took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second, taking advantage of a pair of Davidson errors. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) and Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) both reached on two-out errors, putting runners at second and third. DeRenzi followed with a two-strike line drive single over the second baseman to score both runners.
Davidson got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a one-out triple and fielder's choice RBI.
The Wildcats took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when a pair of singles put runners on the corners with one out. Cushing got a strikeout, but a wild pitch scored a run and moved a runner up to second. Another single gave Davidson a 3-2 lead.
After the Hoyas threatened in the top of the sixth, Davidson put six runs on the board, off of three GU pitchers, with two outs in the bottom half to extend its lead to 9-2.
Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) led off the top of the ninth with a pinch-hit double. He moved to third on a ground out and scored when DeRenzi grounded out to first. Consecutive doubles by Racusin and Kuzbel cut the deficit to 9-4, but the Hoyas could not mount any more two-out magic.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m. and Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will get the start on the mound for the Hoyas. Live stats and a webstream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
