SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate recorded 15 hits and 10 runs in the first five innings to defeat the Georgetown University baseball team, 12-0, on Friday evening at Cleveland S. Harley Park. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 2-3 while the Spartans improve to 2-3.
Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) started on the mound and went 4.2 innings, giving up 10 runs, 8 earned, on 15 hits. He struck out six. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) went 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one walk with one strikeout. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) also pitched a scoreless frame.
Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J/Ocean City) and Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) paced the Hoya offense with two hits apiece. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) also added singles.
Upstate got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first as five of the first six batters reached and the Spartans took a 3-0 lead.
The Hoyas threatened in the top of the third as two-out singles by Hall and Bernstein to put two runners on base. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) hit a ground ball that hit the first base bag, but the first baseman made a nice play on the tough hop to get the out.
The Spartans added three more runs, two of which were unearned, in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 10-0. They scored two more runs, one earned, off of Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville) in the eighth.
The Hoyas put two runners on in the ninth on singles from Racusin and Stevens, but could not score.
Georgetown will continue its weekend on Saturday when it plays at Wofford College. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) will get the start for the Hoyas. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. and live stats and video stream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
