WASHINGTON - A 3-point basket from senior forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) sent the game into overtime, and a layup from senior guard Tyshell King (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) sealed the victory as the Georgetown University women's basketball team topped the Providence College Friars (11-13, 2-10 BE), 72-70, on Friday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the victory, the Hoyas improved to 14-7 overall and 6-5 in league play.
"We've talked about our depth all year, and I'm so proud of the people who stepped up," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "Tyshell King is the energy of this team, and tonight it was her night. The fun part was going in that locker room and watching them celebrate her. That's this team, there's no hierarchy, there's no one person that gets it done. When their number is called, they're ready."
With two seconds remaining in regulation, Woodard grabbed an offensive rebound and stepped back for the trey to tie the contest at 64.
In overtime, the Hoyas never led until the final minute and managed to tie it twice. With 1:35 left, Woodard put back the offensive board to tie the game at 70. GU came up with the defensive stop, and King came down and drove the lane, laying it in to put the Blue & Gray ahead for good. On Providence's final possession, junior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) took a huge charge to seal the victory, GU's fifth straight.
Three Hoyas scored in double figures as Woodard led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds as well as two blocks and three steals. Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) posted 14 points and six assists, while King had a career-high 13 points with five rebounds. Petke was huge on the glass pulling in a squad-best 14 rebounds.
Georgetown outrebounded Providence, 48-43, and forced 19 turnovers on 10 steals. GU shot 36.6 percent (30-of-82) from the field, but allowed PC 41.8 percent (23-of-55) shooting for the game. The difference was at the charity stripe as Providence went 18-for-25, and the Hoyas were 4-for-11.
The Friars opened the contest with a 3-pointer, but Georgetown quickly answered. The defense was solid, forcing PC turnovers early on. Despite the pressure, the lead went back and forth until senior guard Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) and White connected on a pair of treys to make it 14-12.
Providence managed to tie it up with a bucket, and then take a lead to make it 16-14 in favor of the Friars at the end of the first.
King opened the second quarter with a layup to tie it up, but Providence came right back. No team could establish an advantage as both had bright spots and turnovers. Senior guard Jade Martin (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) was key after a steal resulted in her taking it up the floor and dishing to Woodard for the layup to put the Hoyas up by one, 22-21.
Late in the second, Petke grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the put back. This sparked an 8-0 run as King hit back-to-back treys to make it 30-23, GU's largest lead to that point. Providence came back and scored five points in the final minute to make it 30-28 at the half.
The Friars scored four points early on in the third to regain the lead. Junior guard Dorothy Adomako's (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) layup tied it at 32, as the game looked the same as the first half with neither team able to gain control of the score.
Providence led for much of the quarter, however, it was never more than six as GU stayed within reach. At the end of the third quarter, Georgetown trailed, 52-47.
It was a small deficit for the Blue & Gray to begin the final stanza, but GU was not done fighting. A White layup sparked an 8-0 run, and she added a 3-pointer before a Woodard jumper made it 56-53 in favor of the Hoyas with 3:58 remaining.
This set up the final exciting minutes and overtime, as the Hoyas managed to get the 72-70 victory.
