Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team lost a pair of games to Brown University on Saturday, dropping 2-0 and 11-10 decisions at Murray Stadium in Providence, R.I. With the two losses, the Hoyas fall to 13-10 on the season, while the Bears improve to 6-6.

Game One: Brown 2, Georgetown 0
Georgetown outhit Brown, 8-6, but could not push a run across, falling 2-0 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) started and went 7.0 innings on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out 10. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) fired a scoreless inning out of the bullpen with one strikeout.

Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) led the offense with two hits apiece.

Brown provided the only scoring of the game in the bottom of the third, plating two runs on a double and two singles to take a 2-0 lead.

The Hoyas threatened in the fifth and sixth innings, putting two runners on in both frames, but could not come up with the clutch hit.

Game Two: Brown 11, Georgetown 10
Brown scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Hoyas, 11-10, and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) struck out seven in 5.2 innings on the mound, while allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and two walks. Alex Deise (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. John's College HS [D.C.]/FSU), Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands Regional [N.J.]) and Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham, B. Broughton) combined for 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

DeRenzi again paced the offense, registering three hits and scoring three runs while also stealing a base. Stevens finished with three RBI, while Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) each drove in two.

Georgetown got the bats going right away in the top of the first. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) walked and moved to second on a bunt single by DeRenzi. With two outs and the bases loaded, following a Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) walk, Bernauer singled up the middle to score both Bernstein and DeRenzi and give GU an early 2-0 lead.

The lead ballooned to 5-0 in the top of the second as Stevens cleared the bases with a three-run double into the right-center field gap, scoring John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover), DeRenzi and Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) who had reached via two walks and an error, respectively.

Brown cut the lead to 5-2, on three-straight doubles in the bottom of the third, but Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) launched a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth to move Georgetown's lead back to four, 6-2.

The Bears came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.

The Hoyas rallied immediately in the top of the seventh, scoring twice to take an 8-7 lead. DeRenzi and Racusin led off with consecutive singles and moved into scoring position on a ground out. Kuzbel lifted his nation-leading seventh sacrifice fly of the season into left to score DeRenzi and allow Racusin to move to third. After Bernauer was hit by a pitch, Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) singled into left field to score Racusin and give GU a one-run advantage.

Georgetown tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Weisenberg, who had come on defensively in the seventh inning, singled in Kuzbel and Bernauer to give the Hoyas a 10-7 lead.

Brown scored four runs in the ninth off of Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) and Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice), on two singles and five walks, to walk off, 11-10.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
