WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team took an early 3-0 lead and held on to defeat Brown University, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Murray Stadium in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 14-10 on the season, while the Bears fall to 6-7.
Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and earned his fourth-consecutive victory. He went seven strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out six. Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands Regional [N.J.]) pitched a scoreless inning, getting out of a base- loaded jam in the eighth inning, and Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) did not allow a run in the ninth for his first career save.
Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) led the GU offense with two hits and two RBI.
Georgetown struck early in the top of the first. Bernstein led off with a bunt single and scampered all the way to third when the throw from the third baseman was wild. One out later, he crossed the plate on an RBI ground out by Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist).
The Hoyas extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second. A single by Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) and double by Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) put runners on second and third before Bernstein deliver a two-out, two-run single into center.
Brown scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to cut the lead to 3-2 before Morreale fired a scoreless ninth for his first career save.
Georgetown will return home to Shirley Povich Field for a midweek matchup against Navy on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats and a video stream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
