PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team used a four-run third inning to defeat ACC-foe Boston College, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at North Charlotte Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. It was GU's fourth-consecutive win, improving them to 6-5 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 3-5.
Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) started on the mound and went 8.0 strong innings, allowing just three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out five. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) pitched a perfect ninth inning, with two strikeouts, for his third save.
Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) each had a hit and an RBI to lead the GU offense, while Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was on base twice and scored a run.
The Hoyas broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of third with four runs on just one hit. With one out, Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) were both hit by a pitch, surrounding a walk to DeRenzi, to load the bases. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) grounded a ball that the first baseman booted, allowing Bernstein to score and leaving the bases loaded. Kuzbel was then hit by a pitch, the third of the inning for GU, to push DeRenzi across the plate. John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Racusin from third, before Davis singled into left field to complete the scoring as Stevens jogged home to make it 4-0.
Boston College cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. The Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out on two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Consecutive RBI ground outs plated two runs to cut Georgetown's lead to 4-2.
BC added an uneared run in the eighth, but Mathews stranded the tying run in scoring position with his fifth strikeout. Swad fired a perfect ninth, striking out the last two batters, to seal the victory.
Georgetown will wrap up its first weekend at the Snowbird Baseball Classic when it returns to North Charlotte Regional Park on Sunday to face Ball State at 10:30 a.m. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray.
