WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team looks to ride the momentum of its six-game winning streak as it opens BIG EAST play this weekend against Creighton University. First pitch on Thursday is scheduled for 3 p.m., while Friday's game will start at 4 p.m. and Saturday's finale will begin at noon. The Hoyas (20-12) went 4-0 last week, defeating Cornell, 3-1, on Tuesday before sweeping NYIT over the weekend by scores of 6-4, 9-0 and 13-3. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) hit a solo home run against Cornell to notch his 100th-career RBI and become the 19th member of Georgetown's 100-RBI club. He batted .467 (7-for-15) for the week, adding three doubles and four RBI. Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) batted .500 (8-for-16) with four doubles and five RBI. The pitching staff registered a 1.00 ERA for the week, allowing just four earned runs in 36 innings, while recording a 29-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
On Monday, Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after needing just 77 pitches to fire seven shutout innings in Georgetown's 9-0 win over NYIT at Shirley Povich Field. He allowed just seven hits while not walking anyone and tied his career high with nine strikeouts. Cushing improved to 4-2 on the season, winning his second-consecutive game, and lowered his ERA nearly a full point to 4.59 on the year.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) leads the Hoyas with a .388 batting average, 29 runs scored, three triples and 10 stolen bases. He is also second with 32 RBI. Kuzbel is right behind DeRenzi with a .373 batting average while leading the squad with four home runs and 33 RBI. He is also second on the team with eight doubles, behind only Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) who has 10. Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) are batting .368 and .357, respectively.
Creighton, which has won three-straight games, enters the weekend with an 11-16 overall record and a 2-1 mark in conference play after taking two of three from then-No. 14 St. John's last weekend. The Bluejays are batting .253 as a team, while the pitching staff owns a 3.97 ERA and a 223-74 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
