WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team closed out the 2017 season with back-to-back victories, defeating visiting St. John's 14-4 in BIG EAST action on Saturday afternoon. Nine different Hoyas tallied goals in the game as the Blue & Gray improved to 4-10 overall on the season and 1-4 in league play.
Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Patrick Aslanian (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) both led the Hoyas with three goals on the day, the first career hat trick for Aslanian and the eighth this season for Bucaro. Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) added two goals while Peter Conley (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), Matt Behrens (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville), Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Spencer Secord (Toronto, Ontario/Culver Academy), Greg Galligan (Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Zeke Morrill (Baltimore, Md./Gilman/Deerfield) all chipped in lone goals.
Eight of GU's 14 goals were assisted on the day, as Behrens, Berge, Carraway, Rob Clark (Cooksville, Md./McDonogh School), Conley, Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep), Chris Pauzer (Robbinsville, N.J./Loomis Chaffee) and Eduardo White (Littleton, Colo./Kent Denver) all tallied helpers.
Bucaro's hat trick gave him 40 goals on the year, ranking him seventh in a single season at Georgetown. His 53 points as a sophomore are also 14th most in a season. Conley continued his ascent in the record books, pushing to 16th overall on the career scoring list with 120 points and is tied for 13th all-time with 77 goals and ranks 15th all-time with 43.
Defensively, Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) picked up his third win of the season with a 13-save performance between the pipes. He eclipsed the 500 career save mark in the victory and now has 502 in his three-year career, sixth-most in program history. Jack Stephenson (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) and Nate Cornblatt (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Day School/The Lawrenceville School) closed out the final six minutes and change without allowing a goal.
Conor Barr (Wilton, Conn./Fairfield Prep/Fairfield) was credited with four caused turnovers while Michael Mayer (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) added a pair. In all, the Hoyas put 10 caused turnovers on the scoresheet and held the Red Storm to only 9-of-22 successful clears. Mayer and Austin McDonald (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep) collected a team-high four groundballs each while Berge, Conley and Peter Tagliaferri (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) all added three.
Tagliaferri and Riley Mann (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) were solid on faceoffs all day, winning 13-of-22 trips to the `X' combined. Tagliaferri won 8-of-12 trips while Mann was 5-for-10 on the afternoon.
Georgetown outscored its guests 5-0 in the opening frame and never looked back. The Red Storm didn't score until back-to-back goals at the 7:21 mark in the second quarter en route to an 8-2 GU lead going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, St. John's notched two goals to open scoring in the second half to pull within 8-4, but the Hoyas rattled off six unanswered goals the rest of the game to seal the 14-4 victory. Georgetown allowed a season-low four goals, all of which came in a 12:26 span of playing time.
Joe Madsen, Nick Heller, Michael Hatzopolous and Mike Madsen all scored for St. John's. Daniel Costa collected 15 saves in goal.
