WASHINGTON - The seventh-seeded Georgetown University men's tennis team was knocked off by third-seeded Butler on Saturday in a tightly-contested match by a score of 4-3. The Hoyas finish the tournament with an overall record of 8-14.
The Blue & Gray got off to a strong start by winning a huge doubles point. After Butler won the first completed match, the Hoyas responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the point. At No. 2, Jordan Portner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) got it started with a 6-2 victory. Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) and Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel High School) clinched the point with a 6-4 win.
The Bulldogs, however, won four of the six singles matches to earn the decison. This started by winning the first three completed matches to take a 3-1 lead. GU tied the match up with wins at No. 1 and No. 6. At No. 1, Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) won 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 and Witmer won at No. 6 by a score of 6-4, 6-4.
