Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) got two big outs, including one strikeout, while Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville [N.J.]) pitched a scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The Hoyas jumped on the board quickly in the top of the first. DeRenzi led off with a walk and came all the way around to score on a double by Racusin into the right-center field gap. With two outs, Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) lined a double into the left field corner to plate Racusin and give GU an early 2-0 advantage.
The lead doubled to 4-0 in the top of the second inning. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) led things off with a walk and went to third with two outs on a single by DeRenzi. Racusin followed with a two-run single into right field, scoring both runners.
The Retrievers got a run back with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning and then cut the Georgetown lead to one, 4-3, with a two-run double in the fourth inning. A three-run homer in the fifth and another two-run shot in the sixth gave UMBC an 8-4 lead.
An RBI ground out by Racusin in the eighth, scoring Hall who had led off the inning with a single, cut the deficit to 8-5, but that was as close as the Hoyas would get.
