Final Stats

BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team scored six runs in two different innings, defeating No. 15 St. John's University, 13-5, on Saturday night in a BIG EAST Conference game at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 25-21 overall and 3-8 in BIG EAST play, while the SJU falls to 33-8 on the season and 7-4 in conference action.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and went seven strong innings for his fifth win of the season, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out four. Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) pitched the final two innings, allowing a run while striking out one.

Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) led the GU offense with two hits and four RBI, while Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) both finished with two hits and three RBI. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) both added two hits. Weisenberg scored three runs while Bernauer and Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) both crossed the plate twice.

The Hoyas jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six times for an early 6-0 lead. Kuzbel started the scoring with a fielder's choice RBI, plating Bernstein from third. After a walk loaded the bases, Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) drove in Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) with a sacrifice fly. Weisenberg singled to center to push Kuzbel across the plate and, after a Bernauer infield single loaded the bases, Bernstein delivered a two-out, two-run single to cap the scoring.

St. John's got a run back in the top of the second, scoring on a single, double and ground out. Two more runs for the Red Storm, one of which was earned, in the top of the fourth cut the lead to 6-3.

Georgetown came right back with its second six-run inning of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring all six runs with two outs to extend its lead to 12-3. Weisenberg drove in the first two runs with a triple off the wall in left-center field. Bernauer was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, and both runners scored on a double down the left field line by O'Reilly. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) reached on an infield single before Bernstein singled into right field, scoring O'Reilly and sending Hall to third. Hall scored when the throw by the right fielder was wild.

After St. John's scored a run in the top of the fifth, the Hoyas answered in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI ground out by Bernstein, pushing the score to 13-4.

The Red Storm scored a run on four walks in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats and a video stream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
