Lubbock Round1
Round 2 Team Times
For 12 holes on Monday during the first round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University, the Georgetown University women's golf team was among the leaders in the 18-team field. The Hoyas, however, struggled during the final six holes and stand in 16th place after the first round at 23-over par 311.
The second round will be held on Tuesday, May 9. Georgetown will tee off beginning at 10:50 a.m. (ET).
Arizona State, ranked No. 7 in the country, leads the field at 5-over par 293, with Oregon second at 6-over par 294, host Texas Tech and No. 2 UCLA tied for third place at 8-over par 296 and Brigham Young fifth at 9-over par 297.
Starting on the 10th hole, the Blue & Gray got off to a tremendous start early and were among the top 11 teams during the first nine holes. After making the turn, the course leaderboards showed the Hoyas among the top nine teams in the field. GU was nearly through the third hole (the team's 12th of the day), the Hoyas were standing at 10-over par with six holes to play.
"It was exciting to see us so far up the leaderboard," Head Coach Katie Brophy said. "That is the golf we are capable of playing and in line with the scores we've been shooting all year. We talk about how tournaments are marathons, and we've only completed one-third of the race. We need to do a better job of keeping our energy up on the back nine during the long days ahead. This is a gritty team and they can really dig deep for the next 36 holes. I'm looking forward to watching them put something great together tomorrow."
Between holes No. 4 and No. 8, however, the Hoyas lost 13 strokes, with nine bogies and a pair of double bogies, and fell to 16th place at 23-over par 311. The teams in 11th place (Iowa State, 16-over par 304) through 16th place (TCU is 15th at 20-over par 308) are separated by only seven shots.
Sophomore Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) leads Georgetown, standing in a tie for 55th place at 5-over par 77. She had a pair of birdies on the back nine, which she played at 1-over par 37.
A trio of Hoyas - junior Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./Taft), sophomore Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's) and freshman Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Sammamish) are all tied for 61st place at 6-over par 78. Popowitz, who had birdies on the par-5 18th hole and the par-5 2nd hole, was ninth in the field of 97 golfers with a 4.50 average on par-5 holes. Eleey is 12th overall in the field with a 3.0 scoring average on par-3 holes and has 11 pars.
Junior Lauren Gros (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prep) is tied for 80th place at 9-over par 81.
Georgetown will play alongside Richmond and Sacred Heart on Tuesday.
