WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's rowing team continued its fall season with another solid display on the water at the 54th Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) in Boston on Sunday. The Hoyas fielded one lightweight four and a heavyweight eight in the event.
Lightweight
The Hoyas in the lightweight four were able to beat their second-place performance from a week ago at the Navy Day Regatta with a victory in the men's lightweight four event with a time of 17:33.20. Georgetown finished ahead of second-place Cornell by a 20-second margin. The winning crew was comprised of
Ryan Zuccala (Orchard Park, N.Y.) as the coxswain with
Artym Hayda (Providence, R.I.) as the stroke followed by
Olivier Malle (New York, N.Y.),
Liam Lafferty (Orinda, Calif.) and
Hector Formoso-Murias (Key Biscayne, Fla.).
"Today's race was a synthesis of years of hard work, some very solid rowing, and a little expression of frustration," said Varsity Lightweight Coach
Lee Rumpf. "The rowers were disappointed to learn that they did not get the bid for the 8+ entry so we spent the last month focusing on this event. I am very pleased with the results of that focus. I believe this is the first men's rowing Head of the Charles win. Also the time set by the four today was quick. They would have finished fourth in the Championship 4 event, so there is cause to celebrate. However, we are racing in the 8+ this upcoming Sunday at Princeton and we will want to shift our intentions towards that race starting tomorrow."
Heavyweight
The only heavyweight boat for the Hoyas posted a 29th-place finish out of 32 boats with a time of 16:29.64 in the men's championship eights category. In the eight,
Maxim Goohs (Potomac, Md.) served as the coxswain with
Justin English (Bettendorf, Iowa) at stroke followed by
Daniel Eigler-Harding (Arlington, Va.),
Ian Estevao (Arlington, Va.),
Clemente Borgogni (Rye, N.Y.),
Luke Nassif (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.),
Jack Mozingo (Darien, Conn.),
Owen O'Brien Powers (Portland, Ore.) and
Emmett Orts (Philadelphia, Pa.).
"The lightweights did a phenomenal job winning their event," said Head Coach
Luke Agnini. "It was a great continuation from winning that event at the IRAs. The heavyweights, unfortunately, did a repeat of last weekend and didn't handle the conditions well. They weren't able to row a competitive rate and it showed in the results. This is a very young group though, and it will take time to find top-end sustaining speed. They are working very hard and now we just have to work on quality."
Following the HOCR, the Hoyas will be back on the water for the Princeton Chase in Princeton, New Jersey on Oct. 28.
