WASHINGTON - UNC Greensboro scored two runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Georgetown University baseball team in heartbreaking fashion, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 7-19 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 20-6.
Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) started on the mound and pitched into the sixth inning, allowing three unearned runs on seven hits while registering six strikeouts. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) came on in relief and fired two shutout innings with three strikeouts, getting out of a jam in the sixth inning.
The Hoyas had four hits on the day, highlighted by a two-run home run from Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk). Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) both had a hit and scored a run.
After UNCG took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an unearned run, the Hoyas answered right back, tying the game in the top of the second. Singles by O'Reilly and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) and a walk to James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) loaded the bases with one out before Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score O'Reilly and make it 1-1.
The Spartans regained the lead with single, unearned runs in the third and fourth innings to go up, 3-1.
Georgetown got a run back in the sixth inning when Achecar blooped a two-out double into left field and scored when O'Reilly reached on an error, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2.
Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) led off the top of the eighth with a pinch-hit walk. With two outs and Nelson on second, McCabe launched his first career home run over the right field fence to give the Hoyas a 4-3 lead.
However, a walk, triple and passed ball gave the lead back to the Spartans, 5-4, in the bottom half of the inning. The Hoyas could not mount a second comeback in the ninth as UNCG sealed the series finale.
The Blue & Gray will play a pair of road midweek games this week, traveling to Coppin State (Tuesday, 3 p.m.) and Maryland Eastern Shore (Wednesday, 3 p.m.).
