April 13, 2018

Box Score

BETHESDA, Md. - Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) hit back-to-back home runs, and the Georgetown University baseball team defeated George Mason, 7-3, on Friday afternoon in the series opener at Shirley Povich Field. With their fourth-straight win, the Hoyas improve to 11-20 on the year, while the Patriots fall to 14-18. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and fired 7.0 strong innings, allowing three runs, just two earned, while scattering seven hits and three walks. He struck out three to earn his second win of the season. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) threw 2.0 innings of one-hit relief, striking out the side in the eighth inning.

Bernstein led the offense with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, while also stealing a base. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) also had three hits, including two doubles, and Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) each added two base knocks. Gabor scored two runs to go along with his home run.

George Mason opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the second, but the Hoyas immediately tied it back up with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) walked and Wiesenberg singled to put two runners on base before Bernstein delivered a two-out, RBI single into right field, scoring Achecar to knot the score, 1-1.

It was a pitching duel over the next few innings before GU broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gabor and Bernstein led things off with back-to-back home runs to right and right-center field, respectively. It was the first career homer for Gabor and the second of the season for Bernstein. One out later, McCabe restarted the rally with a single up the middle and went to third on a double by Bernauer, his second of the game. Both runners came home to score when Davis lined another double over the center fielder's head to give the Hoyas a 5-1 lead.

Two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth extended GU's lead to 7-1. Gabor led off with a walk and went all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt before Bernstein singled him in. After a sacrifice bunt and stolen base put Bernstein at third, a sacrifice fly from McCabe put the Hoyas up by six.

George Mason got two runs back in the seventh on a single, triple and sacrifice fly, but Morreale shut the door over the final two innings to seal the win.

Due to impending weather on Sunday, the Hoyas and Patriots will now play a doubleheader on Saturday at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch in game one will be at 1 p.m., with game two immediately following the conclusion of the first game. Both contests will be nine-inning affairs. Live stats and a subscription-based video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com. The teams will no longer play on Sunday at George Mason.
