Second-Seeded Hoyas Face Denver in BIG EAST Semifinals

May 2, 2018

WASHINGTON - The No. 2 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team will face the No. 3 University of Denver Pioneers in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Gainesville, Florida at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Jay Alter and Daniel Gillman calling the action.

On Tuesday, sophomore attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll when the league announced its final set of weekly awards. The No. 22/17 Hoyas closed out the regular season with a 15-8 victory at Temple University on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. With the win, the Hoyas enter the postseason with a mark of 12-5 overall and 8-1 in BIG EAST Conference play. The Blue & Gray clinched a BIG EAST Championship berth and the No. 2 seed the weekend prior.

Bruno tallied eight goals on the week, four in each contest for a 1-1 week to lead the Blue & Gray. She managed the game-winner over Temple, and was 2-of-3 on free position shots. Bruno also tallied a ground ball and a caused turnover.

Junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) leads the offense with 59 points on 49 goals and 10 assists. She is followed by Bruno who has managed 39 goals and 11 assists for 46 points. Sophomore midfielder Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) has 24 goals and 13 assists for 37 points as well as 66 draw controls and 21 caused turnovers, while junior attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) has notched 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points. Senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) rounds out the top five with 30 points on 21 goals and nine assists.

In goal, junior Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) has played a majority of the minutes with 140 saves as well as a 11.75 GAA and a .440 save percentage on the season.

The Pioneers finished the regular season with a mark of 11-5 overall and 6-3 in BIG EAST play to tie for third. In the Pioneers' 11-10 win in the regular season finale, Kendra Lanuza led the Crimson and Gold with four goals, tying a career high on five shots while adding a game-high two assists. In Denver's 6-0 run in the second half, the attacker had two goals and an assist, including netting the goal that gave DU its first lead of the game at 10-9.

Earlier this season, the Hoyas managed a tight 8-7 victory in Colorado to down the Pioneers as the defense held off a late Denver run. Bruno and Gebhardt managed three goals and an assist each in the crucial victory. The Hoyas are 4-1 all-time against the Pioneers, but 1-0 in postseason play. Last year, GU lost, 9-8, in the BIG EAST semifinal at Villanova Stadium. The past three meetings have been decided by two goals or fewer.

Georgetown is 7-10 in BIG EAST Championship play since it began in 2007. The Hoyas are the only team in the league to have qualified for the championship every year of its existence. They have advanced beyond the semifinals six times and won the tournament in 2010.

The winner of Thursday's game will move on to the championship, which is scheduled for noon on Saturday. It will be broadcast on FS2.
