May 21, 2018 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University Department of Athletics held a private commencement ceremony on Monday for 10 graduating seniors from the baseball team. While the Georgetown community celebrated its graduation exercises last Saturday, the Hoyas were away from campus, closing out their regular season against Seton Hall.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) both earned their degrees from Georgetown College, while Bennett Stehr (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) graduated with the highest student-athlete GPA from the School of Foreign Service. Seven Hoyas â€" Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont), Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS), Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory), Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga), Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice), Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) â€" all graduated from the McDonough School of Business.
The ceremony began at 11 a.m. on Monday morning when the 10 members of the Class of 2018 paraded into Riggs Library in front of a small, intimate gathering of friends, family, coaches and teammates. The student-athletes were presented by Dr. Shelly Habel, Associate Director of the Academic Resource Center for Student-Athlete Services, to Georgetown President John J. DeGioia, who then accredited their degrees and presented them with their diplomas.
Georgetown will next compete in the BIG EAST Championship, presented by Jeep, held at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati. The fourth-seeded Hoyas will play top-seeded St. John's in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament on Thursday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
