May 23, 2018 MASON, Ohio - The Georgetown University baseball team had four student-athletes selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team when the conference announced its postseason awards on Tuesday. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice), senior first baseman Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont), senior second baseman Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and senior catcher and designated hitter Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) all earned their first career All-BIG EAST selections. The all-conference teams were selected by the league's head coaches. The four all-conference nods tie the program record set in 2015 and 2016.
Killam has had a breakout season on the mound, compiling a 6-3 record with a 2.71 ERA in 76.1 innings. His 89 strikeouts are already a Georgetown single-season record, and he ranks third in the BIG EAST with 40 strikeouts in conference play. Killam was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on March 26 after striking out 11 in 6.2 innings in a victory at Ohio State. He followed that up two weeks later with a career-high 12 strikeouts in a win over Xavier. Killam also earned a selection to the weekly honor roll on April 30 when he fired 8.1 innings to defeat Creighton in Omaha, Nebraska.
Bernauer finished the regular season with a .299 (41-for-137) batting average, leading the Hoyas with 19 extra-base hits, including five home runs and four triples, while ranking second on the team with 31 RBIs. He came on strong over the last 27 games, hitting .337 (35-fo-104) with a .625 slugging percentage. He was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on May 7 after recording 11 hits and 11 RBIs in a four-game stretch. He has recorded five RBIs in three separate games this year and had a two-home run performance against UMBC on May 15.
Bernstein has had his best year on the Hilltop, tying for the team lead with a .313 (60-for-192) batting average and 12 doubles while playing in all 53 games. He has hit a career-high three home runs, which is tied for the second on the team, and also ranks fourth on the Hoyas with 23 RBIs and eight stolen bases. Earlier this season, Bernstein became the 37th member of Georgetown's 150-hit club, and heads into the BIG EAST Championship needing just two more runs scored to become the 32nd player in program history to score 100 runs. He was twice named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season.
Stevens, who was selected to the second team as a designated hitter, has appeared in 42 games this season, both as GU's catcher and DH. For the year, he has two home runs, eight doubles, 16 RBIs and is a perfect 4-of-4 in stolen bases. In BIG EAST play, Stevens tops the Hoyas with a .394 (13-for-33) batting average and a .576 slugging percentage as he has a home run and is tied for the team lead with three doubles.
Georgetown will next compete in the BIG EAST Championship, presented by Jeep, held at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati. The fourth-seeded Hoyas will play top-seeded St. John's in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament on Thursday. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
