WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (12-6) received a berth in the 2018 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship as announced on Sunday on NCAA.com. The Hoyas earned one of 13 at-large berths and will face Virginia Tech on Friday, May 11. The game will be hosted by the University of North Carolina and played at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C.
This marks Georgetown's 15th trip to the NCAA Tournament, but the first since 2014. The Blue & Gray is 14-14 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The furthest the Hoyas have advanced is to the championship game in both 2001 and 2002. In GU's last appearance in 2014, the Hoyas defeated Johns Hopkins, 9-8, in overtime in the opening round before falling to UNC 10-8 in the second round. Those games were both played at UNC's Fetzer Field as GU returns to the Tar Heel State for the 2018 tournament.
The Hoyas have built a 2-6 record against the 27-team field this year with wins over Denver (8-7) and Johns Hopkins (15-14). Georgetown is 4-0 all-time against the Hokies, but the squads have not met since 2004. They have never played in the NCAA Tournament.
A league-record three BIG EAST Conference teams earned a berth in the 2018 NCAA Tournament as Florida received the league's automatic qualifying bid and the No. 6 overall seed, while Denver also earned an at-large berth.
The matchup against Virginia Tech is set for Friday at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C. at 3 p.m. The Tar Heels' longtime home stadium, Fetzer Field, is under renovation this year and will reopen in 2019. Carolina played its 2018 home games at Kenan Stadium, home of the UNC football team, but that facility is not available next weekend due to commencement exercises.
The winner of the game will face the second-seeded Tar Heels on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for both seniors and students aged 7 through 17, and can be purchased through the UNC Ticket Office.
