June 21, 2018

WASHINGTON - This summer, 12 current members of the Georgetown baseball team are playing around the country in various summer collegiate baseball leagues. Additionally, three former Hoyas are playing professionally for major league organizations.

Two rising juniors, Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) and Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy), are pitching in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Killam, who set the Georgetown single-season strikeout record with 97 this spring, is pitching for the Falmouth Commodores. In one inning of work out of the bullpen, he allowed three runs on four hits.

Morreale is throwing for the Bourne Braves and has made three relief appearances. All three outings have been scoreless, covering 4.1 innings with just two hits allowed and eight strikeouts. On Wednesday, Morreale fired two hitless innings with four strikeouts.

Three Hoyas - Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus), Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) - are all suiting up for the St. Cloud Rox in the Northwoods League. Cushing has made four appearances on the mound with three starts. In 19.0 innings, he is 1-0 with a meager 0.94 ERA. He has 19 strikeouts and allowed just nine hits, three walks and two runs.

Weisenberg has played 17 games, primarily at second base, and is hitting .281 (16-for-57) with a home run, double and triple. He has nine RBIs and has scored nine runs with four stolen bases. Davis has appeared in 19 games and is batting .254 (17-for-67) with six doubles and five RBIs. He has 10 walks to give him a .359 on-base percentage to go along with seven runs scored and two stolen bases.

Four current and future Hoyas are playing locally in the Cal Ripken League. Rising sophomores Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) and Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) are teammates on the Herndon Braves. Lamon has made two starts on the mound and, in 6.0 innings pitched, has a 3.00 ERA with nine strikeouts. Davis has appeared in eight games, both behind the plate and as the designated hitter, and is batting .263 (5-for-19) with a double, two triples an RBI and five runs scored.

Left-handed pitcher Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) is pitching for the Alexandria Aces in the Cal Ripken League. In two starts, covering 9.1 innings, he is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA and 10 strikeouts. Georgetown incoming freshman Carter Bosch, who just graduated from the Potomac School, is also pitching for the Aces and has made three starts on the mound. In 17.2 innings pitched, Bosch is 2-0 with 18 strikeouts and has not allowed a run. He has allowed just 11 hits and five walks for a 0.91 WHIP.

Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), who started all 55 games at shortstop as a freshman in 2018, is playing for the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). He is leading the Westerners with a .383 (18-for-47) batting average in 12 games. He has one home run, two doubles, seven RBIs and 10 runs scored, and also is 4-of-6 in stolen bases.

Rising junior Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central/La Salle Institute) is also in the NECBL, pitching for the Newport Gulls. In two starts, he is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and four strikeouts in 8.1 innings.

Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School), a rising junior, is playing for the Norcross (Ga.) Astros in the Sunbelt League for the second-consecutive summer. He is batting .192 (5-for-26) in eight games with three RBIs and four walks.

Rising sophomore Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) is suiting up for the Marthas Vineyard Sharks in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL). In 13 games, he is batting .350 (14-for-40) with a home run, two doubles, 12 runs scored, six RBIs and nine stolen bases.

Will Salomon (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick), a rising junior, is playing for the Thundering Herd in the Hudson Valley Collegiate Baseball League. He is batting .273 (3-for-11) with a double in five games.

Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands [N.J.]), who missed his sophomore season due to injury, is close to returning to action and will be pitching for the Holly Springs Salamanders in the Coastal Plain League.

Simon Mathews (C'17), is in his second season pitching in the Los Angeles Angels organization. He started the year with the Angels' Class A affiliate, the Burlington Bees. In 10 games, with eight starts, Mathews was among the team leaders with a 2.04 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched. He earned a promotion to Advanced Class A, the Inland Empire 66ers, in early June. In two starts, he has a 9.82 ERA with seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched. Mathews has also made two appearances, one start, in Triple-A Salt Lake where he is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings.

David Ellingson (MSB'17), who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners following his junior year in 2016, returned to the Hilltop and completed his finance degree in December 2017. His 2018 season just got underway as he is back with the Everett AquaSox - Seattle's short season rookie team. In just one appearance out of the bullpen, he has allowed two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings with one strikeout.

Matt Smith (B'16), who was drafted six picks ahead of Ellingson by the Milwaukee Brewers, missed the entire 2017 season because of injury. He is still listed on the disabled list as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
