WASHINGTON – The Georgetown field hockey team will travel to North Carolina this week for their opening weekend. The Hoyas will face off against Davidson on Friday at 5:30 p.m and travel to Boone to play Appalachian State on Sunday at noon. Live stats will be available for both games at www.GUHoyas.com, as well as live streaming for Friday's game versus Davidson.
Christy Longacre will lead the Hoyas in her inaugural season as Georgetown head coach. Longacre comes from Ball State University where she was the head coach for two seasons, compiling a record of 13-23. Longacre had been with Ball State since the 2013 season, first serving as assistant coach.
The Hoyas are entering the 2018 season with 17 letterwinners from last year's squad and are welcoming five freshman to the Hilltop. Sophomore
Cami Osborne (Newton Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur) led the Blue and Gray last year with 12 goals and 26 points in her freshman campaign. Captaining the Hoyas this season are seniors
Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia),
Sam Hickey (Coatesville, Pa./Villa Maria) and
Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph's Academy). The squad finished with a 9-10 record last season.
The Hoyas will be facing the Wildcats on Friday. Davidson was picked ninth in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Preseason Poll and will be fielding 17 returners. Last year the Wildcats finished with a record of 6-13. The two teams met early last season as well, with the Hoyas coming away with a 3-1 victory on goals by returners Masiello and
Jessica Lagano (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich). In the last five meetings between the Hoyas and the Wildcats, Georgetown has the upper hand with three wins.
On Sunday, Georgetown will square off against the Mountaineers of Appalachian State. App State finished fourth in the Mid-American Conference last year, with an overall record of 8-10 and is returning eight starters from last year's squad, including leading scorer Ali Williams. The Hoyas have squared off against the Mountaineers three times in the past five years, winning two and dropping one. Last year the Hoyas finished with a commanding 8-0 victory over the Mountaineers with goals from seven different players. Osborne notched two goals in the contest and goalkeeper
Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) recorded six saves.
The squad has an even schedule this season with nine home and away contests each. After the weekend, the Hoyas will host three home games, with home opener against Sacred Heart on Aug. 31. Additionally, seven conference games will be played this season with four away and three on Cooper Field.
