Georgetown Names 2019 Captains

WASHINGTON – Head Coach Pete Wilk and the Georgetown University baseball team have announced the four captains for the upcoming 2018 season. Seniors Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus High School) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla. / San Ramon Valley [Calif.]), as well as junior Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) were selected by a team vote and will lead the Hoyas this spring.

"We think we've got a nice balance of leadership among these three guys who bring a lot of experience to the table," Wilk said. "The guys are all back on campus and we can't wait to get started in preparation for the start of the season."

Cushing is Georgetown's most experienced returning starting pitcher, having started 34 games on the mound in his first three years. He made 11 starts, and 16 appearances overall, as a junior in 2018 finishing with a 2-6 record and a 6.79 ERA in 63.2 innings pitched, ranking second on the team. He struck out 43 on the season and is GU's active career leader with 149 strikeouts. Cushing picked up wins against Western Michigan and George Mason last season, firing a season-high 7.0 innings in the victory over the Patriots. He recorded a season-high six strikeouts in his first start of the season against George Washington.

Weisenberg appeared in 50 games, making 48 starts, at third base in 2018. He batted .259 (43 for 166) with seven doubles and 20 RBI. His 23 runs scored ranked fifth among the Hoyas. He had 11 multi-hit games and five games with multiple RBIs, including going 4 for 4 with two RBIs in GU's first win of the season against Western Michigan. Weisenberg is Georgetown's active career leader in hits (99), home runs (10) and RBIs (59).

Achecar appeared in 40 games, making 29 starts at both first base and designated hitter last season as a sophomore. He finished the year batting .183 (20 for 109) with five doubles, eight RBIs and 15 runs scored. He had five multi-hit efforts, including two doubles in a win over Princeton on March 16. Achecar was on base four times, with two hits and two walks, and scored a pair of runs on March 9 against Western Michigan. Defensively, Achecar did not commit an error in 151 chances at first base.

Georgetown will open the 2019 season on the weekend of Feb. 15-17 at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Hoyas will play Illinois, Sacred Heart and the host Demon Deacons. GU is coming off a 2018 season that saw it finish with an overall record of 25-30, going 25-20 after dropping the first 10 games of the year to earn the program's fourth-consecutive season 25-win season and the fifth in the past six years. The Hoyas went 8-9 in BIG EAST play, qualifying for their first conference tournament since 2015 and just the second since 1986.
