Hoyas Host Creighton and Providence to Begin BIG EAST Play

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team will open BIG EAST Conference play on Sunday hosting the Creighton University Bluejays at 2 p.m. at McDonough Arena.  The Blue & Gray will continue opening week with a 1 p.m. matchup against the Providence College Friars at 1 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas (3-8) are coming off of a solid 57-39 win at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to close out nonconference play on Saturday, December 21.
  • Graduate student Taylor Barnes led all scorers with 16 points, while freshman Graceann Bennett added 10 points as 11 different Hoyas scored in the game.
  • Sophomore Shanniah Wright, junior Tatiana Thompson and graduate student Brianna Jones pulled down five rebounds apiece.
  • Georgetown outrebounded The Shore 46-36, and forced 16 Hawk turnovers.
  • The Hoyas shot 35.8 percent (19-53) from the field and allowed the Hawks 23.5 percent (12-51) shooting in the game.
  • Barnes leads the team with 11.4 ppg, while Jones is second with 10.1 ppg on the season. 
  • Anita Kelava has been tough on the glass averaging 6.5 rpg.
 
About the Bluejays
  • Creighton is 8-3 on the year but is coming off of a 70-55 loss at Arizona State prior to the holidays.
  • Senior Jaylyn Agnew is averaging 17.9 ppg, while guards Olivia Elger (11.6 ppg), Tatum Rembao (11.0 ppg) and Temi Carda (10.2 ppg) round out those in double figures.
  • Agnew also leads the squad on the glass with 6.4 rpg, and Rachel Saunders is right behind averaging 6.2 caroms per game.
  • The Bluejays hold a +3.5 turnover margin against opponents and average 5.7 spg as a team.
 
Creighton Series
  • Georgetown is 4-8 all-time against the Bluejays and 3-3 at home.
  • Last year the Hoyas split, losing 65-38 in Omaha, but coming back for a 62-53 victory at McDonough Arena.
  • GU has won two of the past three matchups after losing three in a row.
 
About the Friars
  • Providence is off to a hot start with 9-3 on the season most recently downing Loyola Marymount 48-45 at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The Hoyas faced the Lions earlier this season winning 64-53.
  • PC has three players averaging in double figures with Mary Baskerville at 13.3 ppg, Kyra Spiwak at 11.4 ppg and Kaela Webb rounding out the top three with 11.3 ppg.
  • Prior to the holidays, Providence played four games in five days going 2-2 over that stretch.
  • The Friars will face Villanova in the first game of the weekend on Sunday.
 
Providence Series
  • Georgetown is 36-29 all-time against the Friars at a record of 19-10 at home.
  • Last year, the Hoyas won all three meetings with a 68-52 victory on the road, a 61-56 win at home and then a 53-46 triumph in the WNIT.
  • The Blue & Gray has won the past nine meetings dating back to 2016 and the last home loss for the Hoyas against the Friars was in 1996.
