WASHINGTON – Following a stellar performance last weekend where he helped the Hoyas bring home two Championship of America wheels from the 125th running of the Penn Relay Carnival, All-American
Joe White (Clifton, N.J. / DePaul Catholic) has been named the BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week as announced by the league on Monday. White ran the anchor leg on both the sprint medley relay (SMR) and the 4x800-meter relay squads.
White helped bring a pair of COA titles back to the Hilltop, the first event wins since 2004 for the Blue & Gray. On Friday, in a tactical anchor leg, White split 1:46.45 over his 800-meter frame to help GU capture its first SMR title at Franklin Field since 1997.
The half miler returned on Saturday to anchor the men's 4x800-meter relay and, thanks to an impressive last 200 meters from teammate
Ruach Padhal (London, Ontario / John Paul II Catholic), was set up to once again anchor a winning foursome. His carry of 1:50.91 was enough to hold off a kicking trio of runners as Georgetown tallied its first 4x800-meter relay title since 2004.
This is White's ninth overall weekly accolade and second from his outdoor career. It is the third this season for the GU men as he joins Padhal and All-American
Spencer Brown (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) who garnered the distinction earlier this year.
White became just the third Hoya in program history to anchor a pair of winning COA relays in the same year. He joins James Burgess (1925 – 4x400m, SMR) and All-American Bryan Woodward (1997 – 4x800m, SMR). Both Burgess and Woodward were Olympians, competing in the 1924 Paris Olympics and 2000 Sydney Olympics, respectively.
It was just the sixth time in program history GU brought home multiple wheels as they achieved the feat in 1997, 1990, 1951, 1925 and 1922.
The Hoyas return to action on Friday, May 3 as the Hoyas will travel locally to the Kehoe Twilight Meet, hosted by the University of Maryland in College Park.
